The Douglas County District Attorney’s Office will discuss the officer involved shooting investigation, conducted by the Oregon State Police, from the June 14th incident on Happy Valley Road, at a press conference being held Thursday morning.
On June 14th just after 3:00 p.m. deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a disturbance with shots fired at 2306 Happy Valley Road, between Green and Lookingglass. Law enforcement arrived to find a woman shot with a male shooter reportedly on foot in the area. A large contingent of police descended on the scene.
While deputies were helping the shooting victim, 19 year old Lisa Martin of Eugene, the shooter fired a shot at police from a wooded area. Deputies returned fire but the man fled. After the victim was taken to the hospital, the shooting suspect was found deceased about two hundred feet from the home. The initial investigation determined that the man died of a self inflicted gunshot. That was later confirmed by the medical examiners autopsy. The shooter was identified as 25 year old Joseph George of Springfield.
Lisa Martin went to Mercy Medical Center and then to Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield for life threatening injuries. She was eventually released and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team is conducting an investigation into the shooting. Thursday morning’s press conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. News Radio 1240 KQEN will be at the press conference and will have an update on the story on the Noon Report.
