A Sutherlin man was arrested for hit and run and DUII after the SUV he was driving left West Harvard and struck a power pole at the intersection with Balff early Tuesday morning. The vehicle was lying on its side after hitting the pole.
A report from Roseburg Police says the incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. The report says the power pole was completely sheared off and lying on the ground. Live power lines were laying across West Harvard as well.
When police arrived, witnesses said the driver had taken off and was running south on Wharton Street. Police scoured the area and set up a perimeter, eventually capturing the driver, a 25 year old man. He was cited and released.
Pacific Power responded and installed a new utility pole. Westbound traffic on Harvard was directed to use the center turn lane while passing the scene, for a few hours after the incident.
