A long time member of the Douglas County logging industry will be remembered on Saturday.
A Celebration of Life for Gene Whitaker will be held in Douglas Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. According to his obituary, Whitaker grew up in Wisconsin and worked in the logging industry with his father and his brother Don.
In the summers he would come to Oregon to haul the abundant big logs. He made Douglas County his home in 1959. Slowly he started adding trucks to his fleet as Gene Whitaker Inc. In the 1970s, he came up with the idea for a better log trailer and Whit-Log Inc. was born in 1977. Whitaker was known for working every day doing what he loved right up until his death.
The Celebration of Life will begin Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Following the service, a truck parade will leave the fairgrounds and head past the company offices in the Wilbur area.
Gene Whitaker passed away on March 13th at age 82.
